Bitung, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, 19 June 2019 – In celebration of Coral Triangle Day, the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) gathered 20 women from fishing community villages in Bitung City, North Sulawesi, about 30 kilometres from the Regional Secretariat CTI-CFF. The intention is to raise awareness on gender equality as a step towards making them informed and involved in contributing to the livelihood of their family, community, and economic development of Bitung.

Happy Coral Triangle Day! This year's theme, "Corals of Change: Paving the Way for Gender Equality in the Coral Triangle", highlights the important role and contributions of all genders in addressing the region's marine and coastal challenges.

Gender equality is essential for the effective management and protection of marine and coastal resources. Let us continue to advance gender equality in marine-related activities by promoting women's key roles in scientific research, building their capacities, and creating more opportunities for empowerment and employment.
